Companies can make brilliant moves, but there are also times when things don't work out quite as planned. From a costly yet potentially lucrative acquisition by the world's largest search engine to a video game retailer wishing it had a cheat code for sales, here's a rundown of the week's best and worst in the business world. Tesla Motors (TSLA) -- Winner Tesla sells cool yet expensive electric cars, and business is starting to get charged up. Tesla revealed this week that it sold and delivered 6,900 cars during the fourth quarter, far more than it was originally targeting. Tesla had moved just 5,500 Model S sedans during the third quarter, with 1,000 of those going to Europe. That worried investors, because it pointed to the possibility of waning domestic demand for the plug-in speedsters. This encouraging announcement was enough to send the stock 16 percent higher on Tuesday. Tesla was one of last year's hottest stocks, and it's kicking off 2014 with the pedal to the metal. GameStop (GME) -- Loser Last quarter was supposed to be the video game industry's moment to shine. With the Xbox One and PS4 breathing new life into the console business, GameStop seemed to be sitting pretty and well-stocked with the systems that were in high demand this holiday season. Unfortunately, that wasn't enough. Hardware sales did nearly double at GameStop, but new software sales fell by a steeper than expected 22.5 percent. Owners of older systems aren't in a hurry to build up their libraries with games that aren't compatible with the new consoles, and Xbox One and PS4 owners are apparently not snapping up enough games to make up for it. This is bad news for GameStop, because its margins on software are a lot better than on hardware. The end result is that GameStop now expects to earn between $1.85 a share and $1.95 a share in the holiday quarter, well short of the $2.16 a share it earned a year earlier and its previous guidance that called for it to post a profit as high a

Tesla (TSLA) fell sharply on Friday, slipping into bear market territory, along with Netflix (NFLX) and Facebook (FB) . All three stocks have gained spectacularly in 2013, although Tesla shouldered the burden of becoming the poster child of momentum plays due to its 344% rally last year.

Shares of Tesla (TSLA) have surged in after-hours trading after the upstart automaker announced better-than-forecast earnings.

Reuters Elon Musk, Chief Executive of Tesla Motors

Tesla said it earned 33 cents a share, above forecasts for 21 cents, on sales of $761 million, ahead of forecasts for $677.36 million. Tesla also said it would produce 7,400 cars during the first quarter, up from 6,587 during the fourth quarter. Even better, Tesla’s profit margins should increase to 28% by the end of 2014, the company said, up from 25.2% in the fourth quarter. The only bad news: Tesla predicted that its operating expenses would grow by 15% during the first quarter of 2014, while research & development costs would also rise.

Shares of Tesla have gained 14% to $220.92 in after-hours trading after dropping 4.9% during market hours.

Earnings, however, might not have been the only factor in the big jump, however. Interactive Brokers’ Andrew Wilkinson explains:

Hints in Wednesday’s earnings press release that Elon Musk may be ready to share news about Tesla giga-factory as well as positive forward guidance and better-than-expected fourth-quarter earnings sent the electric-carmaker shares through a hyperloop trading towards $225 in aftermarket hours.

At the close of options trading just ahead of the press release the 21Feb4 195 strike straddle settled at $23.00 implying a move to as high as $218 and as low as $172 by Friday expiration resulting from an earnings inspired move. The bullish move in extended hours trading therefore exceeds expectations baked into the options market. Until the dust settles it remains unclear whether the momentum surrounds fresh buying or is the result of covering amongst the plentiful number of shorts.

    Stay tuned.

Hot Forestry Stocks To Invest In Right Now: Ishares Trust United States Treasury (TIP)

In recent years, though, investors have discounted the potential impact of inflation on their portfolios. Consider these facts:

Gold is the traditional safe-haven investment for those who believe that inflation will take away the purchasing power of paper currency. Yet the plunge in gold prices has led to a mass exodus of investor interest in gold, with the popular SPDR Gold Trust (NYSEMKT: GLD  ) losing billions of dollars not just due to price declines but also as investors have taken money out of the ETF entirely. Inflation-indexed bonds like the Treasury's TIPS have climbed so far in price that their real inflation-adjusted yields are negative, even for bonds that don't mature for another 20 years. That's been excellent news for existing investors in iShares Barclays TIPS Bond (NYSEMKT: TIP  ) and similar inflation-indexed bond investments, but it presents no inflation protection for those considering purchases now. The sole fly in the inflation ointment has come from energy prices, with gasoline and heating-oil prices having remained stubbornly high despite plentiful domestic production from unconventional plays as refiners Phillips 66 (NYSE: PSX  ) , Valero (NYSE: VLO  ) , and others have greatly boosted their exports of refined products rather than letting Americans reap the benefits of high supply. Yet even the oil market has seen international spreads narrow, and gasoline prices have finally started to come down modestly, providing further downward pressure on inflation.

Based on the conventional understanding of inflation, you'd think that all these signs of its demise were a good thing. The truth is far less clear.

Although the market seems to be losing traction, and even losing ground now, the same can't be said of every single stock. A handful of stocks like China Jo-Jo Drugstores Inc. (NASDAQ:CJJD), Vuzix Corp. (OTCBB:VUZI), and Adamis Pharmaceuticals Corp. (NASDAQ:ADMP) are forging ahead, doling out gains against the grain. Not that moving higher while other names are moving lower is a sure sign that ADMP, VUZI, and CJJD will remain in their uptrends indefinitely, but it sure doesn't hurt their odds. Here's a closer look at each one and why you'd want to add them to your watchlist.
