5 Best Construction Stocks To Watch Right Now

Blue-chip stocks are surging today on the heels of a report about the domestic construction industry. With roughly an hour left in the trading session, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) is up by 119 points, or 0.77%.

The Commerce Department released data (link opens PDF) this morning showing that construction spending increased by 0.5% last month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $874.9 billion. While this soundly outperformed the same statistic for April, when construction spending improved by only 0.1%, as my colleague Justin Loiseau noted, it nevertheless came up slightly short of the 0.6% consensus estimate.

Far and away the best news from the release was what it suggested about the housing sector, which, by almost every indication, is continuing to recover. According to the Commerce Department's estimate, spending on residential construction grew by 0.5% over April and an astounding 5.4% over the same month last year.

This same trend was on display last week with the release of earnings from Lennar (NYSE: LEN  ) and KB Homes (NYSE: KBH  ) , two of the nation's largest homebuilders. Lennar reported a 36% year-over-year increase in home deliveries and a 55% uptick in its backlog for the three months ended May 31. And KB Homes said that its deliveries and backlog shot up last quarter by 39% and 19%, respectively, over the same time period last year.

On February 25, Chicago Bridge & Iron (CBI) reported earnings of $1.91 a share. Excluding a big tax benefit (72 cents) and acquisition costs (11 cents), adjusted earnings came to $1.19 a share. That was 3 cents a share above Wall Street projections.

The stock market is at record highs. We've had 16,000 on the Dow, we've got 4000 on the NASDAQ, we've got 1600 and something on the S&P; all of these are records or approaching records. The NASDAQ is getting back to where it was before it collapsed in the dotcom bubble. The question is, what do you do? Do you buy into this rally? Do you not? I think if you're taking kind of a big picture look and trying to guess where the indexes are going to go, I think you're really talking about guessing. I would much prefer to try to do it on a stock-by-stock basis. For example, there is a stock that I own in the Jubak's Picks portfolio called Chicago Bridge and Iron (CBI). It's a construction company. It builds things like power plants, natural gas facilities, and infrastructure, and all that stuff. I liked it because it's exposed to the US energy sector, which is showing a pretty good boom. My target price on this has been $74 a share and recently the stock hit it. The question is, because it's hit that target price, do you sell it?

Top 5 Forestry Companies To Buy For 2014

If you're going to steal a celebrity's car, you might have some of the most trouble pulling off the caper by driving away in the victim's Maserati.

Burglars who broke into the home of Miley Cyrus in Los Angeles' San Fernando Valley on Friday not only took jewelry, but her Maserati Quattroporte sedan, according to police. Beautiful car, but instantly recognizable anywhere, even in Los Angeles which is thick with exotic luxury cars. Based on security camera footage, it looks like the burglars were a man and woman who scaled the fence when no one has home, then plundered the garage and house.

Only 755 Quattroportes have been sold in the U.S. so far this year through April, up from 83 last year, according to Autodata. Far fewer, of course, would be running around L.A.

Public companies leveraging their patent portfolios, (aka "patent plays"), are getting the market's attention. Companies such as Vringo (VRNG), ParkerVision (PRKR), MGT Capital (MGT), Worlds Inc. (WDDD.OB) and others have presented trading opportunities due to their volatility while retaining the chance for a big payoff to those investors who stay the course. Yet there exist viable patent plays that are still undiscovered. Some of these so called "plays," which are not getting enough attention, are actually real companies making and selling real products or services in contrast to pure patent monetization companies. Some known examples are Single Touch Interactive (SITO.OB) and Blue Calypso (BCYP.OB). This article is focused on another one of these patent plays, On Track Innovations Ltd. (OTIV).

Deutsche Bank also listed Expedia Inc. (NASDAQ: EXPE), Fortinet Inc. (NASDAQ: FTNT) and Informatica Corp. (NASDAQ: INFA) as the three most controversial stocks. These three literally generated the most hallway, and probably bar-stool, debates at the conference.

Nobody seems to expect another round of consolidation in the space. Fortinet (NASDAQ: FTNT  ) has gained 4.8% today, but other data security experts have stayed flat or traded down. Fortinet always looked like a reasonable takeout target, particularly since the company parted ways with longtime CFO Ken Goldman last year. The Sourcefire deal paints a slightly larger target on Fortinet's back, but you have to wonder who would be able to pay a buyout premium on top of Fortinet's $3.5 billion market cap. Most of the big boys have already picked their positions in the security space, to the point where even Intel has jumped into the game.

If you saw the alarming headlines circulating everywhere this morning, then there's a good chance you've already taken on a new position in Fortinet Inc. Both are solutions to the underscored problem, and truth be told, likely will benefit from ugly reality this morning's news is spreading. FTNT and CHKP may not be the best ways to play the news-based investing theme, however. The best long-term play is a solutions provider called Staffing 360 Solutions Inc. (OTCBB:STAF). While the company may not superficially sit in the same category as Fortinet or Check Point Software Technologies, fundamentally, it does, and may actually be better positioned for growth.

Best Wireless Telecom Stocks To Own For 2014

Westlake, Texas-based Solera Holdings (NYSE: SLH  ) describes its business strategy as "Leverage, Diversify, and Disrupt." That sounds like a noisy strategy, but so far, the maker of software for the automotive insurance industry is keeping quiet as a mouse about the details.

In February, Solera bought Web-based subrogation software maker HyperQuest for an undisclosed sum. This morning, the company announced yet another acquisition -- but once again, it declined to disclose how much it cost. Solera confirmed Wednesday that it has just bought Australian body-shop management-software maker Eziworks, which operates under the "Car Quote" brand name.

Solera describes Car Quote as "a critical communication link between insurers and body shops that allows them to exchange collision data," and it says its acquisition will "accelerate our delivery of an end-to-end claims management platform in Australia."

But it still won't say how much the acquisition cost it.

10 Best India Stocks To Own For 2014

The MSCI Emerging Market Index is down by about 12 percent since May, but it has regained some ground as good economic news emerges from China.

Chinese trade growth ticked up in August, with exports rising 7.2 percent year-over-year. Notably, exports to the US rose 6.1 percent. Import growth remained slightly sluggish, though, up 7 percent from the same month last year but down from the 10.9 percent reading in July.

An improving Chinese economy helps allay growth concerns in emerging markets, but a lot still hinges on when the US Federal Reserve decides to start stepping back its quantitative easing efforts. Much of that hot money has flowed into emerging markets, which have barely had to work for it as investors sought out yields, and a reversal of those flows will undoubtedly cause problems.

Countries such as India and Brazil are highly dependent on capital inflows to fund growth; they’ll certainly take a hit from slowing, or even a reversal of, money flows. But as I’ve repeatedly asserted in previous issues of this publication, I can’t see a full-blown crisis developing.
