5 Best Promising Stocks To Own For 2014

SodaStream (NASDAQ: SODA  ) underperformed the market in 2013, with the stock rising sharply during the first half of the year only to give up almost all of its gains by year-end. Even as the home carbonation system maker's opportunity to pull customers away from Coca-Cola (NYSE: KO  ) and PepsiCo (NYSE: PEP  ) remains as compelling as ever, SodaStream faces challenges in continuing to build sales and convince more of its customers to commit to the long-term value proposition from its systems.

One particularly frustrating aspect of SodaStream's 2013 was that the company largely made good on its promises to produce solid growth. The company has consistently topped analyst estimates for profitability, and rising revenue not only from soda-maker sales but also from certain consumables has been promising. Yet investors seem uncertain about a potential exit strategy for the company after PepsiCo's rumored buyout offer at midyear last year turned out to have no substance. Let's take a closer look at SodaStream's prospects for 2014.

Are you a gambling man (or gambling woman, as the case may be)? Then now may be the right time to place a bet on North American Palladium Ltd (NYSEMKT:PAL) ... the micro cap precious metals miner that has watched its stock fall from just under $2.00 in early February to a low of 44 cents yesterday. That's a 78% drubbing, for those of you who are counting, with a big chunk of that loss coming yesterday when PAL shares lost 28% of their value on the heels of two... shall we say "less than flattering" articles about the company were posted? Yet, sometimes the very best trades are ideas that never looked good on paper.

    4. Platinum-group metals
Platinum and palladium both fell sharply, losing 5% and 6% of their value, respectively. Those losses weren't as extreme as gold's, but they nevertheless represented a drop to levels not seen since late last year. The two major miners producing the white metals, Stillwater Mining (NYSE: SWC  ) and North American Palladium (NYSEMKT: PAL  ) , both lost more than 10% on the day.

Because of low bond yields, many retirees have turned to dividend-paying stocks for yield, but by doing so, they've also increased the risk that the 4% retirement rule won't work. Dividend ETFs Vanguard High Dividend Yield (NYSEMKT: VYM  ) and iShares Select Dividend (NYSEMKT: DVY  ) both offer yields between 3% and 4%, but the average earnings multiples of the stocks they own have gotten fairly pricey recently, trading at around 16 and 19 times earnings respectively. Even the more conservative dividend ETF Vanguard Dividend Appreciation (NYSEMKT: VIG  ) , which looks more at historical dividend growth rather than current yield in choosing stocks, has a multiple of 16 -- higher than you'd want from the slower-growth companies that often end up being the best dividend payers.
