Best Gas Stocks To Own For 2014

American Electric Power Co., Inc. (AEP) has decided to retire unit 5 of its coal-fueled Muskingum River Plant in 2015. Located in Beverly, Ohio, the coal plant has an electric generation capacity of 585 megawatt (MW).

The company arrived at this decision as it was unwilling to spend additional capital on refueling the plant. In February this year, the company had modified the 2007 New Source Review Consent Decree that gave the company an option to either retire Muskingum River Unit 5 or refuel it with natural gas.

The company expects to incur a non-operating, pre-tax impairment charge for the unit in the range of $150 million to $170 million in the second quarter of 2013. However, this will not impact the company full year earnings guidance range of $3.05 to $3.25 and long-term earnings growth rate in the range of 4% to 6%.

Earlier, the company had announced that it will shut down Muskingum four other units. The closure of these units would affect approximately 95 employees. The company will either move these employees to other units or compensate them with severance benefits.

We expect Caledonia to generate close to $600M in EBITDA. While RIGs mid-water OPEX has averaged about $125k/d we expect it to be lower at Caledonia. 2015 Consensus EBITDA for RIG is ~$3B which means 20% of RIGs 2015 EBITDA comes from the rigs that will become Caledonia. The problem (in a bear market) is that companies with lower end rigs trade at a discount just ask Awilco (AWLCF), Fred Olsen Energy, and Paragon Offshore (PGN) which trade at an average multiple of 3.3x on 2015 EBITDA versus RIG which trades at 6.3x.

    1. Renewable Energy Group (NASDAQ: REGI  )
REG surpassed $1 billion in annual revenue for the first time in its history last year while continuing to grow in every important category. The company sold 188.4 million gallons of biodiesel last year -- about 20% of the country's 2012 output -- and is poised to continue capturing the market's upward trajectory. It's not difficult to see why with 225 million gallons of annual (MMga) production capacity throughout the country and 150 MMga under construction.

  • [By Maxx Chatsko]

The third well-researched pick was Renewable Energy Group (NASDAQ: REGI  ) . The nation's largest biodiesel producer was a recently public company at the time and probably got caught in the punishment unleashed upon industrial biotech companies that failed to live up to their early promises. I just didn't think it was justified for REG. Biodiesel is produced in a relatively simple process. Better yet, the company was growing and poised to continue growing with capacity additions looming. Investors finally caught on after REG notched its first year with $1 billion in sales in 2012, and sent shares 120% higher in 2013.

    Other biofuel companies
Unlike KiOR, Renewable Energy Group (NASDAQ: REGI  ) and Green Plains Renewable Energy (NASDAQ: GPRE  ) are ending the year with stock prices at more than double where they started it due to their excellent operational performance. For example, last quarter Renewable Energy Group reported revenue leaped 42% to $458.4 million. Net income had a dramatic turnaround, from a loss of $6.9 million to positive $78.5 million or $2.31 per share, though $42.1 million of that was an IRS tax benefit. Analysts expect Renewable Energy Group to report positive EPS of $1.66 next year while KiOR is expected to lose nearly a buck per share.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Lee Jackson]

UBS feels that the refiners are at a disadvantage as oil prices rise and better off when prices fall. Refiners could underperform as oil prices rise, as margins will be squeezed by the rise in feedstock costs, and they could outperform after the peak in oil prices as margins widen out again. The analysts are somewhat positive on Phillips 66 (NYSE: PSX) and Marathon Petroleum Corp. (NYSE: MPC). They would focus on the other stocks mentioned.

In addition, we recommend buying shares in Brazilian energy giant Petroleo Brasileiro Petrobras S.A. (PBR.A).

Despite a gradual rise in crude oil prices, problems with Brazil's economy, compounded by obstacles in Petrobras's scramble to finance significant on-shore and off-shore hydrocarbon discoveries, have ganged up to erode PBR.A's stock price this year.
