Top Defense Companies To Buy Right Now

Boeing (BA) couldn have wished for a better 2013. Its outlook for 2014, however, has disappointed investors.

Early Wednesday, the aerospace giant easily beat fourth-quarter forecasted earnings growth amid continued strong demand for its jet liners, but tempered its forecast for 2014, despite another planed record year for commercial aircraft productions.

Investors did not react well, sending Boeing falling 5.8% to $129.

Boeing delivered a record 648 commercial aircraft in 2013 and expects to beat that in 2014 with 715 to 725 deliveries, driven by increasing production of single-aisle 737s and long-range 787 Dreamliners. But year-end defense orders were down to $70 billion from $71 billion a year earlier, with a dip expected in profit margins in 2014.

Boeing’s sees earnings per share of $7 to $7.20 in 2014, which misses the $7.57 expected by analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters. Revenue is forecast to climb to $87.5 billion to $90.5 billion in 2014. But that too missed expectations of $92.72 billion.

Unsurprisingly, professional and technical services and the government dominate D.C.'s economy, comprising more than half of its 2011 GDP. The defense sector has thrived in Washington's new renaissance, with some of the industry's top firms having a major presence inside the District's borders. Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT  ) has soared on the defense boom as the U.S. government's largest contractor in 2012, outpacing the next-largest contractor, Boeing, by more than $7 billion obligated, according to the General Services Administration. Lockheed has pulled in 13 quarters of revenue growth since the first quarter of 2009, with sales declining in just four quarters. Washington's boom hasn't appealed to all of America in recent years, but it's been a windfall for Lockheed and the government's biggest contractors.

Boeing (NYSE: BA  ) was heavily favored to win South Korea's contract for 60 fighter jets over Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT  ) and other competitors. The fact that Boeing's offer was rejected and it is currently missing out on the $7.7 billion contract is bad enough. The real slap in the face, though, is that Boeing's bid was the only offer under South Korea's initial budget and was still dismissed.

Overnight central-bank intervention by the People's Bank of China helped reverse a spike in yields, easing market concerns and reversing some early trading losses in Asian markets. U.S. equity futures are pointing to a higher open, as investors await key earnings reports from the likes of Verizon (VZ) , IBM (IBM) , Lockheed Martin (LMT) and McDonald (MCD) this week. Market participants will also be focused on key economic data being released later this week, including Thursday's existing-home sales and home-prices reports, and PMI data.

Defense contractor L-3 Communications (NYSE: LLL  ) enjoyed a banner year for its stock in 2013, gaining 39% in 12 months of trading. But heading into its Thursday earnings report, things were looking pretty bleak for the company. Earnings for the year were expected to be only $8.30 or thereabouts, less than a 4% increase over 2012 levels, and probably too little growth to support the stock's 13-times earnings P/E ratio. But then the numbers came out, and a miracle happened:

  • [By Jon C. Ogg]

L-3 Communications Holdings Inc. (NYSE: LLL) is also now back above the price a week ago, up 0.9% at $91.40 versus $90.80 at the time. Its 52-week range is $68.72 to $94.32 and the consensus price target is still $94.64. L-3 may be more for communications on the surface, but it is involved in many aspects that advanced systems need.

  • [By Adam Levine-Weinberg]

Yet there is a fourth major competitor in the commercial aircraft market -- Bombardier (NASDAQOTH: BDRAF  ) -- and it has its own advanced-technology airplane. The company's CSeries plane is expected to make its first flight as early as this week. Yet the CSeries put up a goose egg at the Paris Air Show, failing to notch a single order. While Bombardier has nearly 200 firm orders for the CSeries, the company will rapidly burn through that backlog once it starts CSeries mass production.
