Top Financial Companies To Watch In Right Now

AUSTIN American Express is reaching out to lower income people and folks dissatisfied with the way they bank or handle money. The financial giant attended South by Southwest this week to help stress that mission.

The stats aren't pretty:

Americans pay about $89 billion in fees and interest seeking money orders, pawnbrokers, payday loans or to go cash a check.

One of four children in the U.S. live in financially "under-banked" households.

Nearly half of all Americans live payday-to-payday, without the ability to raise $2,000 in 30 days should an emergency strike.

"You're like one car accident way from real trouble," says Dan Schulman.

Schulman is the American Express group president for enterprise growth, and in an interview cited statistics like these to shine the spotlight on the need for "financial inclusion."

Just before Thanksgiving, small cap networking stock Infoblox Inc (NYSE: BLOX) sank 28.65% on guidance that was below expectations, but the stock has still outperformed the year-to-dateperformance ofnetworking ETF like the PowerShares Dynamic Networking ETF (NYSEARCA: PXQ) and iShares S&P North American Networking ETF (NYSEARCA: IGN). So what went wrong and could investors have just overeacted?

Mid cap networking solutions company Brocade Communications Systems, Inc (NASDAQ: BRCD) has pretty much been a sleeper for investors since the dot.com bust, but that has changed over the past yearmeaning its worth revisiting the stock along with potential performance benchmarkslike QLogic Corporation (NASDAQ: QLGC), Emulex Corporation (NYSE: ELX) and iShares North American Tech-Multimedia Networking ETF (NYSEARCA: IGN). I should mention that we have recently Brocade Communications Systems to our SmallCap Network Elite Opportunity (SCN EO) portfolio because the company has successfully transitioned from being a hardware company to supporting virtual networks via software and it continues to offer best-of-breed technology.

  • [By John Udovich]

Mid cap telco equipment stock Alcatel Lucent SA (NYSE: ALU) is up 205.9% since the start of the year for a much better performanceverses peers or benchmarks like Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) or the iShares North American Tech-Multimedia Networking ETF (NYSEARCA: IGN)meaning its probably worth taking a closer look at the stock as its been producing plenty of good news for a change.I should note that we have recently addedAlcatel Lucent SA to our SmallCap Network Elite Opportunity (SCN EO) portfolio as atechnical based trade because we think shares will continue higher on speculationabout animproved global footprintfor this leading mobile data network provider.

I think Rockwood Holdings is a good example of a company in the battery and power storage business with really promising prospects. Rockwood makes specialty surface treatment chemicals. It's also a major producer of lithium and lithium compounds used in lithium-ion batteries. This battery business has several industrial end users, but is particularly compelling in the development of electronic vehicle (EV) batteries. In fact, the surface treatment business has dominated revenues of late, but the lithium business has been driving the company's EBIT, which is a trend that seems likely to continue. The company is involved in a joint venture, which was announced in December and is still awaiting regulatory approval, with a Chinese company that will position Rockwood to capture approximately half of the globe's lithium supply. We've been building a position in Value Plus for the last nine months. The stock has done all right over the last year, but hasn't taken off in the way I think it can once the potential for its lithium business is better understood.

Advisors' Opinion:

First up is Pebblebrook Hotel Trust (PEB), the $2.2 billion hotel owner with 14 hotels under its umbrella. The firm started off the year rallying hard, climbing more than 14% from the start of January to early March. Since then, shares have been slugging sideways. But the sideways moves are laying the framework for a second rally leg in PEB this May. Here's how to trade it:

Pebblebrook is currently forming an ascending triangle pattern, a bullish setup that's formed by a horizontal resistance level above shares at $35, and uptrending support to the downside. Basically, as PEB bounces in between those two technical price levels, it's getting squeezed closer to a breakout above that $35 price ceiling. When that breakout happens, we've got a buy signal.

Momentum adds some confidence to the staying power in PEB's eventual breakout -- 14-day RSI has been making higher lows since early February, well before the triangle pattern started forming in Pebblebrook's price. That said, it's crucial to wait for this stock to catch a bid above $35 before putting cash in the trade.

The other key benefit for Strategic is that it enjoys industry-leading earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) per available room. For 2012, Strategic generated $81 per room of EBITDA. Compare this to top comps LaSalle Hotel (NYSE: LHO) at $74 per room and Pebblebrook Hotel Trust (NYSE: PEB) at $71. The reason for this is that Strategic is much less reliant than its peers on rooms, with much greater exposure to food and beverages. Strategic earns 53% of its revenue from rooms, while its peers get around 66% of revenues from rooms.

Their advice: Cover your shorts. That means they’ve upgraded DR Horton and KB Homes to Market Peform from Underperform. And if our idea of a good time is playing the upside in a potential short squeeze, then they have the stocks for you, too–Lennar and the St. Joe Co. (JOE), which have short-interest ratios of 25.3% and 14.3%, respectively. “For investors needing a little more excitement in their lives, we are also upgrading two names that we believe could uncommonly benefit from potential short-covering if ope Trade 2014gains momentum,” Horne writes. Lennar goes to Strong Buy from Outperform and St. Joe goes to Outperform from Market Perform.
