Top 5 Consumer Stocks To Buy Right Now

Earlier this week, Iposed three questions for Chipotle Mexican Grill (NYSE: CMG  ) going into its second-quarter earnings announcement.

And wouldn't you know it? Chipotle stock popped nearly 5% in after-hours trading on Thursday after the company was kind enough to provide answers to each one.

Without further ado, here's what the popular burrito maker had to say:

1. How's the foot traffic?
First, I wanted to know whether customer traffic in Chipotle's restaurants has kept up its healthy pace. After all, much of Chipotle's weakness last year arrived when the company told investors that slowing customer traffic served as a sign forweak consumer spending in the second quarter of 2012.

This time around, however, Chipotle's was happy to report second quarter revenue, which grew 18.2% year over year to $816.8 million. This beat analysts estimates that called for $803 million, thanks both to the result of revenue from new locations, and a 5.5% increase in comparable restaurant sales. That healthy comparable sales growth was largely driven by -- you guessed it -- increased traffic during the quarter.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Rich Duprey]

It's an industrywide cost that can account for large portions of net sales, and it continues to consume a large portion of sales. For example, trade promotions byKellogg (NYSE: K  ) represented 40% of the company's net sales in 2012. General Mills (NYSE: GIS  ) doesn't break out the expense, but when it acquired Yoplait last year, it admitted it would be increasing its marketing on top of an already elevated promotional budget due to greater trade spending.

  • [By WALLSTCHEATSHEET]

Kellogg provides essential food products that consumers enjoy all around the world. The stock has been on an explosive move to higher prices, in recent months, but is now pulling-back a bit. Over the last four quarters, earnings have been mixed while revenue figures have been on the rise which has maintained investors generally pleased with the company. Relative to its peers and sector, Kellogg has been a poor year-to-date performer. Look for Kellogg to catch-up and OUTPERFORM.

  • [By Suravi Thacker]

This has hampered the demand for cereals, a traditional breakfast style. Therefore, the cereal provider Kellogg (K) has been hit the hardest. This was evident when Kellogg posted its quarterly numbers which were not up to the mark, resulting in a decline of its share price.
